The drop down list shows Occupations directly from the database, however, many people have multiple occupations or have other information
stored alongside the main occupation which makes the drop down list less effective than in other searches.
A more effective way is to type in an occupation name into the text box next to the drop-down list*.
Partial Search can also be typed here using % at the end, beginning or both to indicate unknown letters:
e.g. - using the drop-down list to select auctioneers will only find a single* entry because most auctioneers also had other associated occupations.
Entering a partial search auctioneer% results in 122** entries with "auctioneer" at the beginning of occupation,
entering %auctioneer% finds a further set of records with "auctioneer" somewhere in occupation.
Entering a Directory Year or Years will filter the results by the selected year(s)
[** the figures quoted were search results obtained in the early stages of developing the website and will obviously vary as more directories are added]
