Using Search For Organisations by Name

The drop down list shows names taken directly from organisations in the database.
You may also type in a name into the text box next to the drop-down list*.
To search using a Partial name insert a % at the end, beginning or both to indicate unknown letters:
e.g. - stothert% in Organisation will find "Stothert & Co", "Stothert & Inmans", etc.;
%inmans produces both "Staunton & Inmans" and "Stothert & Inmans".
pitt% produces just "Pittard & Barry &; pitt % (note the space between the t and %) produces nothing;
however, %pitt % (notice again the use of a space) produces 14 records that have an organisation containing the name Pitt
Entering a Directory Year or Years will filter the results by the selected year(s)

*N.B. Text items entered are not case sensitive and the drop-down list selection is ignored if the text box is used.

Text items are not filtered by the preceeding letter, so can be used as a quicker way to search.

Using Search For Organisations by Description

To search description insert a % at the end, beginning or both to indicate unknown letters:
e.g. - woollen% will find "woollen merchants ", " woollen manufacturers", etc. where descriptions start with the word " woollen "
To find a word in the middle of a description use % either side - %woollen% produces "tailors and woollen drapers", etc.
Placing spaces at either end of a word, between %, will ensure that words being searched for are isolated:
For instance entering %tea% not only produces organisations that sell tea but will also words with "tea" in them.
By putting in spaces, % tea %, produces only organisations selling tea.
N.B. A word of caution concerning spaces. Placing spaces either side of % gas % will preclude description where gas is joined
with another word. e.g. gasfitters. To stop this happening just place a space in front and nothing after, % gas

*N.B. Combining organisation name and description searches together is possible but obviously may not produce any records
